There is a great article in the Managing section of May 1st Wall Street Journal. "Firing Good Workers Who Are a Bad Fit" by Phred Dvorak. One tip is "Be honest about the reason for the firing: Don't call it a layoff or performance problem if it's not". Further in a quote from Valerie Fredrickson an HR Consultant from Silicon Valley "Managers should remember that employees who aren't fitting in well are often unhappy themselves and may agree that they would be better off elsewhere". As operations and management consultants, we often run into this situation. Helping our clients to deal with a bad fit is a way of helping not only the client, but the employee to be more productive as well.
