Coaching & Mentoring:
In today’s fast paced healthcare environment – no one should go it alone. The very best in every
field have coaches and mentors to keep them at the top of their game. Shouldn’t you?
Coaches and Mentors offer something that only a trusted advisor can provide, objective
assessments and honest recommendations. As both a coach and a mentor for many years, Leslie
Furlow, PhD, RN offers her clients expertise that comes from years of experience.
There is a difference in coaching and mentoring…
| COACH | MENTOR |
- Builds recognized and assessed skills
- Assists with behavior modification
- Creates or recommends experiences
- Demands accountability
- Pushes when guiding isn’t enough
|
- Provides wisdom and expert knowledge from experience
- Guides, never leads or pushes
- Creates or recommends experiences
- Is ready to teach when the mentoree is ready to learn
- Is “a person who’s past is your desired future”
|
Coaching is designed to be structured time for interaction. All coaching engagements begin with
a face to face meeting, objective assessments and development of personal and/or professional
goals. The timeline for the coaching is mutually agreed upon. Further interactions can be face to
face, telephone, email or other electronic means. Appointments are schedule and agendas set
complete with follow up.
A Coach Can:
- Tell you what you need to hear (not necessarily what you want to hear).
- Create or recommend developmental experience to facilitate growth.
- Role play key interactions to hone your negotiation and conflict management skills.
- Ask the hard questions in a safe environment to keep you sharp and prepared..
Mentoring is designed to provide the mentoree access to the mentor. The time consideration and
amount of access is mutually agreed upon at the beginning of the engagement and can be
negotiated as the engagement continues. Mentoring can be face to face, via telephone or
electronic. Personal and professional goals and an informational questionnaire are completed at
the initial interaction. Future interaction can be scheduled or arranged as needed.
Implementation Assistance/Project Management
By providing optional implementation assistance with our projects, we are kept honest. We are not about to recommend something that can’t be implemented. Our solutions are real!
About 70% of our clients request some level of implementation assistance.
- Project Management: we will live onsite for 4 to 18 months to move the project forward.
- Intensive Care: we are onsite for two to three weeks a month and taper off as the project moves forward and gains momentum from within the organization.
- Retainer based: we will tailor onsite and offsite direction to the needs of the client.
- Interim Leadership: we will place an on-site director to manage operations while our client seeks the “right” person for the position.
- Tailored to your need and budget
Development, Education & Training
People must have the tools to succeed. Development, Education and Training pay long term dividends. Our consultants have the skills and understanding necessary to provide meaningful, adult-oriented development and educational programs. Each program is developed specifically for the needs of the organization. Here is a sample of the programs we have provided our clients.
- We worked with a client management team to increase managers’ ability to produce and effectively use financial and budget data. The CFO stated this increased not only the managers’ ability, but reduced the amount of error and improved overall budget compliance.
- One of our clients needed OR nurses to be able to scrub cases as well as circulate. We worked with a selected onsite educator to develop and implement a program. In the six-week engagement six RNs were taught to scrub basic cases, and the onsite educator was prepared to continue the training.
- Tailoring course work to the needs of clients has lead to the development and delivering of management, leadership, communication, conflict management, customer service and quality management curricula for all organizational levels.
We also have Nurse Educators who can teach all aspects of nursing practice, including peri-operative scrubbing & circulating, critical care and emergency nursing skills and basic medical/surgical nursing.

Our experienced temporary leaders occasionally agree to take a permanent positionwithin your organization. We are unique in that all we require is notice, and do not change a fee for this "try before you buy" opportunity.
Change/Transition Management
The only constant in the universe is change. According to William Bridges, PhD, and author of Transitions, “Change is an event that is situational and external to us. Transition is the gradual, psychological reorientation process that happens inside of us as we adapt to external change.” We believe for an organization to be successful, they must manage both change and transition. We have worked with individuals and companies to move forward.
- Several of our clients have worked with us to design and implement new space. One critical consideration is how will the new space affect the processes? Failure to assess the impact can lead to building new space that is costly and doesn’t address future needs.
- We recommend that there be new processes with new space. By identifying process improvement opportunities during the design phase, there is time to adopt better methods as well. We have assisted our clients with both the change in location and the transition of staff to new ways of doing things.
Becoming a Magnet Hospital
We can help you attract and retain the professional staff you need by working with you to achieve “Magnet Hospital” status. We understand what is needed plus we have the experience to create systems that will meet the requirements. We also assist our clients with JCAHO and other regulatory agency surveys. The level of assistance you require is the level you receive. From a mock survey, to assisting with development of systems, we have the tools to make it happen.

The JCAHO standards and survey process are constantly evolving and changing. Our Nurse Consultants, some former JCAHO Surveyors and all with a history of leading organizations through multiple successful surveys, keep abreast of the latest changes and can prepare your organization for a successful survey or help you plan and implement your own preparation process. Among the services we offer are:
- Education on evolving standards
